The Ultimate Office Mate

The moment the clock alarms at 7 AM, I skip in the shower and my brain cells start to enumerate the things I need to do for the day. The hot water does a fantastic job in waking me up and there’s even no need for coffee. Random things pop in my mind as I go through my morning routine. One thought inspired me to write today – being The Ultimate Office Mate.

Living in a fast-paced environment, it is crucial to have a balanced and healthy lifestyle. An eight to five job demands a lot of focus and energy and an active social life may either help relieve or cause the stress. Coming to work without the right frame of mind is a No-no.

The workplace is our second home. We spend so much time with our colleagues hence, building a good relationship with them is a must. As soon as I step in the office, I am in what I call the work mode. I create a new image of myself that is more suitable for a work place. This includes wearing the right clothes and bringing the right attitude.

Here are some tips on becoming the Ultimate Office Mate:

1. Have an early night on weekdays.

This is not new to us. We spent more than a decade in school and heard Mommy say “Early to bed, Early to rise!” This still applies now. However, some of us don’t consider the effects of having late nights. It won’t come to you as a surprise that our brain functions better when we get enough sleep. And of course, the lack of sleep affects our mood. Being grumpy in the workplace is unacceptable.

2. Do not bring your personal problems at work.

Greeting our office mate “Good Morning” may be a bit difficult when we are not having a good one. However, greeting someone politely, even if you are having a bad day, is a basic office etiquette that one need to know. We don’t need to engage in a small talk if unable to, but a kind gesture to acknowledge the presence of your office mate would be more pleasing.

3. Help when you can.

Ever heard of the saying “Two heads are better than one”? A good office mate offers to help when necessary. If you are confident about your skills, you won’t mind sharing it. Plus, it really feels good to know you can do something for others sometimes. On the other hand, if you do not get the help you need from your colleagues, don’t worry. You’ll manage. And this should not stop you from helping them again next time.

4. Smile.

A pleasant smile breaks the barrier between two people. It is easier to work in a friendly atmosphere. Even when speaking on the phone, a smile changes the tone of your voice. Try it today!

5. Represent yourself.

We all come across some people who do not share the same values and etiquette as we do. Just because they do things differently doesn’t mean you need to act the way they do. Always remember you represent yourself so don’t be scared to be YOU.
